6th Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner a Tremendous Success!

The 6th Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner was again a tremendous success raising over $30,000.00.  Featured speaker and Canadian Hall of Famer – Paul Quantrill electrified the crowd with stories of his 14 plus MLB years as well as inspired current Jets to battle through adversity.  The evening celebrates current and former Jets with several big awards being given out – including the Reno Lizzi Scholarships.   Again, Marty Baceda MC’d the evening and continued with the Hays – South Hays debate.  A highlight video created by former VHS student – Brock Skretting started the evening off in dramatic fashion – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fICD3lqEyCY&feature=youtu.be

The 6th Annual Awards/Scholarship Fundraising Dinner is quickly filling up.  The dinner is over 70% sold out with just under 1 month to go.  The VAB is honored to have one of the greatest Canadian pitchers of all time as our featured speaker – 14 year MLB Veteran – Paul Quantrill.

When: Saturday March 3rd – Vauxhall Community Hall

Time: 5 pm Cocktails and 5:45 pm Program Begins

6th Annual Scotiabank/VAB Golf Tournament combined with U of C Series!

The fall baseball season in Vauxhall is an exciting time as the newcomers get their first look at what Southern Alberta has to offer.

The fall opens up on Tuesday September 6th vs PBA at 1:30 pm celebrating VHS and VES Spirit week.  A crowd of well over 400 people took in the event last year.   Come out and support the Jets and both the Vauxhall High School and Elementary school.

The VAB Golf Weekend will be exciting for all supporters of the Academy.  The weekend schedule is as follows:

Friday September 16th - Scotiabank/VAB Golf Tournament

Where: Vauxhall Golf Course

12 noon – Registration/Lunch

1 pm – Tee Off Time

4:30 pm – All golfers travel to Jets Stadium for a Steak Supper and enjoy the University of Calgary vs Jets 9 inning tilt.

5 pm – U of C vs Jets

The 5th Annual Awards/Scholarship Fundraising Dinner (March 5th, 2011) will be highlighted by Featured Speaker Bruce Hurst – 15 year MLB pitcher and former American League All-star.  Global Sports Anchor – Marty Baceda will keep the banquet moving for the 5th straight year as our MC.  10 Scholarships and Awards will be handed out throughout the evening – led by the pretigious Reno Lizzi Scholarship – $2000.00 and a gold ring.  A full listing of the scholarship winners will be announced after the banquet.

4th Annual Awards/Scholarship Great Success!

The 4th Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner was a great success again!  MC – Marty Baceda from Global Sports in Lethbridge and Featured Speaker “Denis Boucher” put on a great show with stories and a strong message to the Jets student-athletes.  With the Honorable Premier Ed Stelmach in attendance and a packed hall of 320 plus people with the evening raising close to $20,000.00.  The evening was highlighted with a cheque presentation from Premier Stelmach and MLA – Little Bow – Barry McFarland to assist in the building of the new Community Facility (consisting of the a dormitory, state of the weight room, state of video room, lockerroom, manager’s suite, athletic therapy room, players lounge and much more).  Thank you for all who attending the banquet, donated auction items and supported the program by buying raffle tickets and auction items. 

The banquet also consisted of many annual awards/scholarships being handed out:

4th Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner!

Please mark March 6th on your calendar.  The Vauxhall Academy of Baseball is excited to share with you news about our 4th Annual Academy Scholarship Awards and Fundraiser Banquet.  Our event showcases our student-athletes and features good food and fun.  Cocktails and appetizers will be served at 5:00 PM and the program will begin at 5:45 PM.  Tickets are $45.00/plate or $300.00/table of 8 and can be purchased by emailing Shannon Mossey at shannon.mossey@horizon.ab.ca.

Our featured speaker will be Canadian – Denis Boucher, former Major League Baseball pitcher and current Team Canada coach.  Read below for a complete bio on Mr. Boucher.  A silent and live auction including unique items (golf packages, Fairmont condo weekend, signed jerseys, signed prints, signed baseballs/bats, concert tickets to name a few.  Raffles and door prizes will also be included to give all guests a chance to bid and win.  8 Scholarships and 4 additional awards will be presented, the most significant of these will be the prestigious $2000 Reno Lizzi Scholarship and commemorative ring.

Denis Boucher from Montreal, Quebec was signed as a free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays in August of 1987.  He was a minor league All-Star in 1988 and 1990 before making his major league Debut in April of 1991. Denis was a starting pitcher in the big leagues for 4 seasons…. the Toronto Blue Jays (1991), Cleveland Indians (1991-92), and Montreal Expos (1993-94).  Denis is one of only three Canadians to have played for both the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos, the others being Matt Stairs and Rob Ducey.  Over his career, Denis pitched professionally for 10 seasons and he took the mound for an astounding 20 different professional teams over his career.  He also served as an ambassador for the Montreal Expos between 1998 and 2005 and special assistant to the coaching staff.  

Denis has now focused his attention to his family and coaching.  Denis currently serves as a Coach with Team Canada which has included the pitching coach for the last 2 World Baseball Classics, pitching coach for Team Canada at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and Professional Scout with the Washington Nationals. Denis also serves as the President of Minor Baseball in his area and coaches minor hockey throughout the winter.  He spends most of his time with his wife Isabelle Fornier and 4 children.

3rd Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner a tremendous success!

The 3rd Annual Awards/Scholarship Fundrasising Dinner was once again a great success.  The evening was highlighted with former 7 year MLB vetran Chris Reitsma as the featured speaker.  He enlighted the crowd with inspiration and his continual battle with injuries.  Once again Global Lethbridge Sports Anchor – Marty Baceda – MC’d the evening and keep the evening rolling and the crowd on their toes with his “Harry Carry” imitations.  The silent auction, live auction, men’s/women’s draw, 50/50 etc were once again a great success.

Vauxhall Academy 2nd Annual Awards/Scholarship Fundraiser

Vauxhall, AB – The Vauxhall Academy of Baseball is gearing towards their 2nd Annual Awards/Scholarship Fundraiser – March 1st, 2008. The event is hosted by MC – Marty Baceda of Global Sports Lethbridge and is highlighted by Featured Speaker Jason Dickson. Dickson is native of New Brunswick and was a Major League All-Star in 1997 with the Anaheim Angels. Dickson pitched for several MLB teams over several seasons until retiring due to an injury. Dickson also represented Canada in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

At the Fundraiser Dinner several awards and scholarships will be presented throughout the evening including the prestigious Reno Lizzi Scholarship – which is being increased this year to also include 2 underclassmen awards. The evening will have a silent auction, live auction, men’s draw, and women’s draw. Some of the auction items include: A Sidney Crosby Signed Retro (Outdoor Game) jersey, an Iginila signed jersey, a Pronger & Iginila Signed Team Canada Jersey (2002 Olympic Jersey), a Joe Thornton signed All-star Jersey, a Jason Bay signed WBC jersey, a Bobby Orr signed picture, several bats signed by – Ryan Howard, Justin Morneau, Russell Martin, Roger Clemens, and Vernon Wells. There are many other items to bid on to support the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball’s pursuit to expand the opportunities for Canadian baseball player development.
