Jets Win Home Opener!

Vauxhall, AB-

The rain held off long enough today for the Jets to win their spring season home opener. It was chilly but the sun was out for the better part of the extra innings game that seen the Jets win 3-2 on a walk off hit batter. With the bases loaded, Tyler Kendall got plunked on the elbow scoring the Jets winning run. The Jets had a chance to close it out earlier in the 9th inning of the game but an RBI single up the middle tied it up for the Jets opponent, Edmonton Cardinals.

The story of the game for both sides was solid pitching starting for the Jets with Mark Baigent who had a solid start going 6 innings and striking out 8 while only allowing a single run. Greg Adams takes the win after working the 10th and 11th innings and keeping Edmonton off the board. Offensively, the Jets couldn’t put much together today outside of a Tyson Zarowny solo home run and Tyler Kendall double. Kendall would later be scored on an error.

The Jets will continue their three-game series against the Edmonton Cardinals tomorrow with the doubleheader starting at 1pm. Live game updates and the latest news will keep being posted on Twitter @VABjets

Jets Lose 8-2 to Mariners!

Peoria, AZ –

The Jets got a unique opportunity today as they got to play against the Seattle Mariners Extended Spring Training camp roster at the Seattle Mariners Spring Training Facility in Peoria, Arizona. It wasn’t about the result today but about the experience of playing at a level that all Jets aspire to one day play at. The Jets would lose the 8-inning game 8-2. Among the players the Jets would face were former major league right handed pitcher Yusmeiro Petit who is on rehab assignment in Peoria. The Jets held their own and weren’t over matched in any facet of the game today as each player competed. In the end, the Mariners physicality and advanced skill sets were the determining factor in the contest.

The Jets now travel back to Vauxhall tomorrow morning in ancticipation of being able to use their own field this weekend for their home opening series against the Edmonton Cardinals beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at 1pm. Keep updated by using Twitter (@VABjets) and here on the website.

Jets Win Big to Wrap Up Vegas Schedule!

Las Vegas –

The Jets broke out of a minor funk today in a big way beating Bishop Gorman High School’s #2 squad 15-3 today in a mercy-rule shortened 5 inning game. Anchored by an explosive offensive performance and solid pitching, the Jets put together as complete a game as they have played all season long. Blair Balog got the start and the win for the Jets working his way through 4 solid innings scattering 7 hits and only a single earned run. Greg Adams would come in after him to work a clean 5th to finish the game.

The Jets would score early and often plating runs in each of their five offensive innings. Each of the 9 starting position players would record at least a single hit. The outburst was led by 8 and 9 hitters Travis Wallace and Marc St. Jean who each went 4 for 4 with four base hits apiece and 4 RBI’s between them. In a freak play, Mitch McGeein hit a home run in the 6-run 3rd inning and broke an aluminum bat in doing so. In total, the Jets would bang out 18 hits. Defensively the Jets shored up having one of their better days yet this year committing only a single error and making numerous good plays all around the infield.

The Jets now travel to Phoenix, AZ in the morning where they will hold a practice and play a game in the next three days at the Seattle Mariners Spring Training Complex in Peoria, AZ. The win brings the Jets record now to 8-5-1 on the spring season.

Jets Pick Up First Win of Vegas Trip!

Las Vegas –

It took a fourth try but the Jets recorded their first win of their Vegas/Phoenix trip this afternoon against Valley HS from right in Las Vegas. The final score would end up being 9-7. After a few close losses left the Jets in a rut, they responded and found a way to win today. Zach Mayo started for the Jets and pitched really well throwing 5 strong innings, taking the win. He constantly got ahead of hitters and showed command of three solid pitches. The runs he allowed would come in the 4th with three quick hits scoring 2 runs and in the 5th inning a few errors attributed to 4 unearned runs but Mayo beared down and finished the inning on his own. Archie Davis would follow and battle through 2 tough innings mired by a few errors, but hang on to record the save.

On the other side of the ball, the Jets put together 10 hits and would take 8 free bases on 6 hit batsmen and 2 walks for their 9 runs. Blair Balog led the way with a big 4 for 4 day highlighted by a bunt base hit that kickstarted the Jets offense and an RBI double later in the game. Tyler Kendall (Estevan, SK) had a classic Southeast Royals Kendall game getting hit in each of his first three at bats to raise his team leading total. The Jets continue to pound out hits game in and game out with 10 this game.

The Jets stand at 1-2 for the Bishop Gorman Easter Classic and wrap up the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 1pm against Bishop Gorman’s #2 team at Hadland Park. The game will be a rematch of the 13-13 tie of Wednesday’s game. Keep following on Twitter @VABjets.

Jets Defeated 9-6 by Riverton HS

Las Vegas –

The Jets drew the early game today, playing at 8am at Bishop Gorman High School’s exceptional facility against Riverton HS from Utah. The Jets lost their second straight, falling 9-6. It was much of the same as the past two days with walks, free bases and lack of hitting in the ladder part of the game being the Jets downfall. For the third straight day the Jets spotted their opponent a first inning lead as Riverton jumped ahead 2-0. The Jets didn’t respond until the third inning when they put together three runs on Matt Benn’s two-run single and a Greg Adams’ RBI single. Riverton stormed back in the top half with a grand slam home run over the left field putting them in the lead for good. The bottom of the fourth is when the Jets would last put multiple runs on the board in an inning with an RBI single from Travis Wallace and a groundout RBI from Blair Balog immediately following that. The Jets threatened in the bottom of the 7th when down 9-5 but only could put one run across on three consecutive singles from Fagnan, Adams and Kendall.

The Jets look to rebound later today at 3:30 with a game at Valley High School against an opponent yet to be determined. The Jets are 0-2 for the tournament and 0-3 on the trip bringing the Jets record to 6 wins and 6 losses on the spring season. Keep following on Twitter for live updates in-game @VABjets.

Jets open Vegas with tie!

Las Vegas –

The Jets opened up their game schedule today in Las Vegas with a 13-13 tie against a young but talented Bishop Gorman JV team out of Las Vegas, Nevada. The weather was sunny and 30 degrees Celsius with a little wind blowing out to left field allowing for an offensive slugfest from start to finish. Defensively the Jets scuffled with lazy play and missed opportunities to produce outs attributing to Gorman’s early 6-0 lead after two innings. Gorman would score runs in each inning but the 7th. The Jets offensive production was explosive and in bunches plating five in the 2nd and three runs in the 5th and 6th each.

The game ended with a little excitement as the Jets trailed 13-11 headed to the 7th. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Tyson Zarowny attempted a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up and the Gorman third basemen would throw the ball away scoring both runners. Gorman’s pitcher would go on to strike out the next three hitters he faced, stranding the game’s winning run on second base.

Today’s game is irrelevant to the tournament standings because it was simply a pre-tournament exhibition game. The official tournament draw begins for the Jets tomorrow at 1pm against O’Gorman High School from South Dakota at the beautiful ballpark on campus at the College of Southern Nevada. The schedule following that is all dependent on the outcome of tomorrow’s game.

Note: Today’s game wasn’t brought to you on Twitter because the team’s resident Tweeter lost his phone. We’re working on finding another way to fix this problem before tomorrow’s game. Another sidenote, the Jets lose three players today to Team Canada training camp in Orlando, Florida. Good luck to Brendan Hendriks, Logan Seifrit, and Tanner Spencer.

Jets finish off 3 game sweep of PBA!

Lethbridge, AB –

It was a very blustery but sunny day in Lethbridge today as the Vauxhall Academy took on the Prairie Baseball Academy for the final game of their three game set. The Jets came out on top 18-7. The Jets pounded the ball offensively anchored by a season high 5 extra base hits and video game-esque numbers from the middle third of the Jets lineup. 4-5-6 hitters Greg Adams, Jeremie Fagnan, and Mitchell McGeein combined to go 9 for 13 with 9 RBI’s and all 5 of VAB’s extra base hits, highlighted by a towering 3-run home run by Fagnan in the 7th inning that would put the game well out of reach. Defensively, the Jets were sloppy committing 4 fielding errors that luckily didn’t dictate the outcome of the game. The mistakes will hopefully be mended with increased time on the field and a better approach to the defensive side of the game.

Today wasn’t an easy day to pitch for either side as both teams struggled with high pitch counts, lack of command, and little for secondary pitches to compliment the fastball. Logan Seifrit started and takes the win throwing the first three innings. An important thing for Seifrit today was taking control of at bats which he did by throwing first pitch strikes to 13 of the 16 hitters he faced in the day. Left hander Zach Mayo came in from the bullpen and worked three hard fought innings struggling a bit with command but battled hard inducing some key groundballs.   Blair Balog threw a solid two innings to finish the game, not walking anyone and striking out 2. Full pitchers lines are below.

The Jets are happy to get in three games this weekend in spite of all the weather challenges Southern Alberta has faced early this spring. The Jets hope to keep their modest four game winning streak alive against PBF (Calgary, AB) next Saturday, April 16th with a doubleheader slated for 1pm. The Jets record now stands at 6 wins and 3 losses.

Jets pick up 2 victories!

Lethbridge, AB –

Sunday marked the Jets second time outside in Alberta all season, both meetings against the Prairie Baseball Academy. The Jets won both games in the doubleheader today, winning by scores of 7-2 and 15-9. The Jets offense broke out in a big way compiling 22 runs on 23 hits. All players lines are listed below. The Jets pitching staff pitched well throughout the day led by starters Anthony McKinley and Tanner Spencer who both picked up wins today. Mark Baigent and Archie Davis were strong in relief appearances both picking up saves.

All in all, the Jets have much of their game to polish defensively in the coming weeks but the offense comes out of today on a high note with contributions all throughout the lineup.

Next action is tomorrow against PBA at Lloyd Nolan Yard again. Game time is 3pm for the single 9-inning game.

Jets finish BOW with a win!

Kamloops, BC –

The Jets played their final game in Kamloops today in a consolation game against the Fraser Valley, B.C. Chiefs and won 7-0. The Jets played well throughout the game led by outstanding pitching from Zach Mayo, Logan Seifrit, and Anthony McKinley. The game moved at a rapid pace due to both teams pitchers working quickly and efficiently. Zach Mayo picked up his first win of the spring season throwing 4 outstanding innings allowing a single hit, no runs, no walked batters, and he struck out five (4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K).  Logan Seifrit followed and continued the Jets dominance on the mound throwing 3 innings, allowing only a single baserunner on a dropped third strike. His line would read 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Anthony McKinley came on to work a scoreless 8th inning throwing well in the process – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. In the Jets past 22 innings of work their pitching staff only allowed 4 hits, and 2 earned runs.

Offensively, the Jets scattered 2 runs and 4 hits through a quick first five innings of the game before breaking out for 2 in the sixth and 3 in the seventh inning. They ended up scoring 7 runs on 11 hits against a depleted Fraser Valley pitching staff. The Jets continue to grow offensively and that was witnessed in more aggressive approaches and the hitters putting themselves in better counts to succeed.

Zarowny 2-4 3B 1 run RBI, Kendall 1-2, Balog 0-2, Hendriks 1-3 BB 2 runs RBI, Adams 1-3 1 run HBP, Fagnan 3-4 1 run, Benn 0-1, McGeein 1-3 2 RBI, Lutz 0-3 2 RBI, Wallace 0-1, Mazurkewich 0-2 1 run BB, St. Jean 2-2 3B 1 run BB

The Jets hope the snow leaves the field soon and they can continue their spring schedule next weekend against Prairie Baseball Academy Junior Varsity team with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Stay updated on the latest Jets new on the website, and on Twitter by following @VABjets.
