Jets Win Tournament Opener!

Vauxhall, AB –

The rained held off and the Jets opened the Haven Agencies Invitational Tournament Thursday night with a 6-0 win over the Lethbridge Elks AA American Legion squad. The Jets led early scoring two runs in their half of the first inning on a couple of groundball outs that would score Tyson Zarowny and Tyler Kendall. The other four runs would come from two in the 3rd inning and two in the 5th inning. In the 3rd, Mitch McGeein would double to lead off the inning and Curtis Mazurkewich would follow him with a triple that he would score on by way of error on the throw to third.

The night however belonged to starting pitcher Anthony McKinley as he turned in one of the finer pitching performances the Jets have had this year. After giving up a leadoff single, McKinley would retire the next 13 batters he faced before another base runner. He would end up throwing 94 pitches in 6 innings allowing only 2 hits and walking only a single batter. Tanner Spencer would come on to work the 7th and he did so in fine fashion by striking out the side to wrap the ballgame up.

The Jets will now play at 7pm Friday against Pro Baseball Force out of Calgary. This will be their second game of the round robin play. The win now leaves the Jets at 16 wins, 8 losses, and a single tie for the spring campaign. Come on out and support the Jets this weekend!

Jets Split And Take Series!

Vauxhall, AB-

It was a sunny but windy day on Sunday in Vauxhall as they played the last two games of their four game set against the Okotoks Jr. Dawgs. The Jets would lose the first game 6-2 but follow it up with a wild 11-10 victory to close out the weekend. For the weekend the Jets would take 3 of 4 games from Okotoks. Game 1 seen the Jets fail to threaten offensively all game with the lone two hits for the Jets belonging to Marc St. Jean and Mitch McGeein. Outside of those two hits the Jets would only put 8 men on base for the entire game. The Jr. Dawgs left hander would go a complete game against the Jets.

Game 2 was a totally different game for both teams as both offensives scored in bunches with Okotoks jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the 1st followed by a 7-1 lead after the 2nd.  The Jets would commit 6 errors in the first two innings digging a seemingly insurmountable hole for themselves. But they would claw back back bit by bit highlighted by a Brendan Hendriks home run, a 2-run double by Jeremie Fagnan, and a full count walk drawn by Hendriks with the bases loaded to tie the ballgame. The Jets would score their winning run on a wild play – Fagnan would hit a groundball to first base with the bases loaded and would beat the covering pitcher to the base scoring Tyler Kendall and putting out Brendan Hendriks who tried to score in behind him. The Jets bullpen did a tremendous job keeping the Jr. Dawgs in check with Tanner Spencer and Marc St Jean combining to throw 4 shutdown innings to preserve the Jets victory.

The Jets next games will be next weekend when they host the Haven Agencies Invitational Tournament held from May 19-22 at Jets Stadium. Check the website throughout the week for updated information on scheduling of the draw. After today’s loss/win the Jets record is 15-8-1 for the spring season.

Jets Take Two From Jr. Dawgs!

Vauxhall, AB-

The Jets took two today from the Okotoks Jr. Dawgs in their home Seaman Stadium. Game 1 seen the Jets win 4-1 behind a hard earned complete game victory by Chad Hodges. Game 2 seen the Jets pitch by committee on their way to a 7-3 win. The Jets offense executed better today then in past weekends with multiple runs batted in with two outs. In the first game, Brendan Hendriks would hit a 2 run home run deep over the right field wall in the 3rd inning that would put the Jets ahead to stay. Hodges would allow his only run of the game in the 5th inning after an error followed by an infield single (that would break up Hodges no-hitter) and another error. That would be all for the Jr. Dawgs in the game.

Game 2 seen Ben Dartnell start for the first time in his life and he would pitch 2 solid innings keeping the Jets off the board. Anthony McKinley and Logan Seifrit would combine to throw the remaining five innings keeping the Jr. Dawgs in check. The offense came throughout the game and was led by Brendan Hendriks as he drove the Jets offense his with 3 for 4 effort including an RBI single and a double that he would later score on.

The Jets look to keep up Saturday’s success tomorrow with the second half of their four game set beginning at 1pm with a doubleheader at Jets Stadium. Mark Baigent and Zach Mayo are the Jets scheduled starters. The Jets record is now 14 wins, 7 losses, and 1 tie.

Jets Split With Chargers

Vauxhall, AB-

This weekend was a big weekend for some Jets with Vauxhall Graduation taking place this past Friday. Congratulations to all graduating Jets! As well the Jets honored their mothers and billet mothers as part of a short presentation of roses before the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Happy Mothers Day!

Amidst the busy schedule for some Jets, it was business as usual on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Great Falls Chargers American Legion AA team. The Jets would split, winning the first game 7-6 and losing the second game 6-5, both of which went into extra innings. In the first game, the Chargers and Jets would exchange runs in four innings bringing it to 6-6 when Tyler Kendall would line a single to right field scoring Jeremie Fagnan from third base to win the game for the Jets. In the second game, a throwing error would do the Jets in as they failed to respond after the Chargers put up a run in the top of the 8th inning.

Due to only having 2 games this week the Jets threw 8 different pitchers who all pitched effectively for the most part save a few walks and alot of unearned runs. Only 7 of 12 runs the Jets allowed today were earned. The Jets offense today was up and down at best led by Jeremie Fagnan who would hit home runs in both games. On a lesser note, the Jets showed a continued trend of struggling to hit with runners in scoring position leaving 20 runners stranded over two games today. Left on base numbers will have to come down in order for the Jets to have more success offensively.

The Jets next games will be a four game home-and-home series against the Okotoks Jr. Dawgs program out of Okotoks, Alberta. Saturday the Jets will travel to Okotoks to play a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon and on Sunday the Jets will host Okotoks at Jets Stadium for another 1pm doubleheader. With the win and the loss today the Jets Spring Season record now stands at 12-7-1.

Jets Sweep Edmonton Cardinals!

Vauxhall, AB –

The rain stayed away once again today allowing the Jets to win both games in their doubleheader against the Edmonton Cardinals. The final in the first game would be 6-3 and in the second it was 4-2. Much like yesterday, the Jets won with their pitching staff led by starters Zach Mayo and Blair Balog. Both put forth solid, workmanlike efforts in picking up the wins. Marc St. Jean and Archie Davis would relieve the two starters to close out the ballgames. On offense the Jets couldn’t put much together today outside of a Mitch McGeein 3-run home run in the 2nd inning of the first game. The Jets would record a total of 11 hits in 12 offensive innings.

The Jets next games are scheduled for May 7th (Grad Weekend) at 1pm with a doubleheader against the Great Falls Chargers American Legion AA team. The wins this weekend bring the Jets spring season record to 11-6-1.

Jets Win Home Opener!

Vauxhall, AB-

The rain held off long enough today for the Jets to win their spring season home opener. It was chilly but the sun was out for the better part of the extra innings game that seen the Jets win 3-2 on a walk off hit batter. With the bases loaded, Tyler Kendall got plunked on the elbow scoring the Jets winning run. The Jets had a chance to close it out earlier in the 9th inning of the game but an RBI single up the middle tied it up for the Jets opponent, Edmonton Cardinals.

The story of the game for both sides was solid pitching starting for the Jets with Mark Baigent who had a solid start going 6 innings and striking out 8 while only allowing a single run. Greg Adams takes the win after working the 10th and 11th innings and keeping Edmonton off the board. Offensively, the Jets couldn’t put much together today outside of a Tyson Zarowny solo home run and Tyler Kendall double. Kendall would later be scored on an error.

The Jets will continue their three-game series against the Edmonton Cardinals tomorrow with the doubleheader starting at 1pm. Live game updates and the latest news will keep being posted on Twitter @VABjets

Jets Lose 8-2 to Mariners!

Peoria, AZ –

The Jets got a unique opportunity today as they got to play against the Seattle Mariners Extended Spring Training camp roster at the Seattle Mariners Spring Training Facility in Peoria, Arizona. It wasn’t about the result today but about the experience of playing at a level that all Jets aspire to one day play at. The Jets would lose the 8-inning game 8-2. Among the players the Jets would face were former major league right handed pitcher Yusmeiro Petit who is on rehab assignment in Peoria. The Jets held their own and weren’t over matched in any facet of the game today as each player competed. In the end, the Mariners physicality and advanced skill sets were the determining factor in the contest.

The Jets now travel back to Vauxhall tomorrow morning in ancticipation of being able to use their own field this weekend for their home opening series against the Edmonton Cardinals beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at 1pm. Keep updated by using Twitter (@VABjets) and here on the website.
