Jets loose their 1st game of the fall vs PBA!

Lethbridge, AB –

The Jets lost their first game of the fall giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to loose 7-5 to the Prairie Baseball Academy. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Josh Stephenson who was 3 for 3 with an RBI, Adam Nelubowich was 2 for 5 with a run scored, Brandt Hittel was 1 for 2, Tysen Denham was 1 for 3 with a run scored and Mike Washburn was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

On the mound Austin Cooper started and went 4 innings allowing 6 hits, 3 runs with 0 BB’s and 1 K.  Cole Stober threw 2 2/3 innings in relief allowing 2 hits, 1 run, 2 BB’s, and 3 K’s.  Taylor Simmonds threw 2/3 of an inning allowing 1 hit, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 0 BB’s, and 1 K to take the loss and Steven Inch threw the final 2/3 of an inning allowing 1 hit, 1 run, 1 BB, and 0 K’s. 

THe loss pushed the Jets record to 7-1-1 and the next action is Friday night in Vauxhall vs Team SK at 7 pm.

Jets finish off a successful weekend with 2 more wins!

Vauxhall, AB –

THe Jets matched up early today with the St. Fx Academy out of Edmonton with a win by a score of 6 – 5.  On the mound Jordan Wong got the no – decision going 4 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs with 0 earned, 1 BB and 4 K’s.  Jamin Heller earned the win going 3 innings allowing 2 hits, 3 run, 1 earned, 2 BB’s and 3 K’s. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Shane Zimmer who was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI, Josh Stephenson who was 2 for 2 with an RBI and Ben Dartnell who was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.   Tyler Hayes, Mike Washburn, and Adam Nelubowich all had 1 hit a piece. 

Game 2 saw the Jets beat the U of C Dinos by a score of 6 – 2.  On the mound Tyler Vavra earned the victory going 4 innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, 0 earned, 1 BB, with 6 K’s.  Victor Caruso earned the save going 3 innings allowing, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, with 4 K’s.

Offensively, the Jets were pretty quiet with Mike Washburn hitting a solo HR, Kym Barthel collecting a hit, Adam Nelubowich collecting a hit with an RBI, and Taylor Simmonds collecting a hit.

Next action is Tuesday at Lloyd Nolan Yard vs PBA starting a 5 pm.  The Jets overall record is 7-0-1.

Jets win both vs St. Fx and U of C Dinos!

Vauxhall, AB –

The Jets won both games of a DH today at Jets Stadium.  After working the field for over 3 hours (due to heavy rains) the Jets won game #1 vs  the U of C Dinos by a score of 6-1.  Steven Inch got the win on the mound going 4 innings allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BB’s, with 8 K’s.  Cole Stober earned the save going the final 3 innings allowing 1 hit, 1 run, 1 BB, with 5 K’s. 

Offensively, Adam Nelubowich led the way going 2 for 4 with a 3 run HR and a triple with 5 RBI’s on the day, Tyler Hayes was 2 for 4, Jamin Heller, Mike Washburn, Shane Simmer, Josh Stephenson, Tyson Denham, and Kym Barthel all had a hit a piece.

Jets finish off the weekend with an 8-2 victory!

Bozeman –

Game 4 of the weekend saw the Jets beat Big Sky Baseball 8-2. The game was close most of the way with the Jets holding a 3-0 lead and then a 4-2 lead entering the top of the 9th inning before exploding for 4 runs to earn the convincing victory.

Offensively, the Jets were led by Mike Washburn who was 2 for 2 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.  Adam Nelubowich was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored and Kym Barthel was 2 for 4.  Shane Zimmer, Steven Inch, and Josh Stephenson all had 1 hit a piece. 

On the mound Taylor Simmonds earned the victory going 4 innings, allowing 1 hit, 0 runs,  1 K, 0 BB’s.  Cole Stober went 3 innings in relief allowing 1 hit, 1 K, 0 runs, 0 BB’s.  Tyler Vavra finished things off going the final 2 innings, allowing 2 runs, allowing 2 hits, 1 BB, and 1 K.

Overall, the trip went pretty well and the club ended the road trip with a 3-0-1 record.  Next action is September 13th and 14th vs University of Calgary and St. Fx Academy out of Edmonton.

Jets swept DH vs Big Sky!

Game 1

The VAB Jets swept Big Sky Baseball today in Bozeman, Montana by scores of 10-7 (Game 1) and 5-0 (Game 2).  Game 1 saw Jordan Wong start on the mound earning a no-decision with 4 innings, allowing 1 hit, with 5 K’s, 5 BB’s, and 1 unearned run.  Victor Caruso threw an 1 2/3 innings in relief allowing 4 hits, 4 BB’s, with 1 K and allowing 5 runs with only 2 run being earned.  Jamin Heller earned the win in relief going the final 2 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits, with 0 runs, 0 BB’s, and 0 K’s.

Offensively, the Jets were led by Adam Nelubowich who was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s, Brant HIttel who was 2 for 3 with an RBI.  Tyler Hayes, Shane Zimmer, Mike Washburn, Ben Dartnell, Taylor Simmonds, Tyson Denham, and Kym Barthel all had 1 hit each in the victory.

Game 2

Game 2 saw Steven Inch dominate on the mound going 7 innings, allowing 1 hit (flare over 3rd base), with 0 BB’s and 5 K’s. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Tyler Hayes who was 2 for 4, Jamin Heller who was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double, Adam Nelubowich who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 1 triple, Mike Washburn who was 2 for 4 with an RBI.  Kym Barthel was also 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Next action is tomorrow in Bozeman beginning at 10 am (DH)

Jets open the 2008 fall season with a 2-2 tie!

Bozeman – The 2008/2009 VAB Jets opened the fall season today in Bozeman, Montana vs Big Sky Senior (American Legion All-star team).  The 9 inning game was called after 9 innings due to rain and cold conditions. 

On the mound Austin Cooper started going 6 innings, allowing 2 hits, 7 K’s, 4 BB’s, 1 ER.  Cole Stober threw a solid 7th inning allowing 0 runs, with 2 K’s and 1 BB.  Tyler Vavra finished things off going 2 innings, allowing 0 runs, with 3 K’s and 0 BB’s.

Offensively, the Jets scattered 8 hits with Adam Nelubowich going 2-5 and Shane Zimmer, Josh Stephenson, Jordan Wong, Jamin Heller, Tyler Hayes and Kym Barthel all collecting 1 hit a piece.  The story of the game was the Jets leaving 17 runners on base. 

Overall, it was a good start to the season.  Brandon Petite, Jean-Guy Bilodeau, and Daniel Worb are all on the DL.

Next action is tomorrow in Bozeman at 1:00 pm (DH)

JC Paquin committs to Middle Georgia College!

Senior 1st baseman and RHP – JC Paquin committed on an athletic scholarship to Division 1 JUCO Middle Georgia College Warriors in Cochran, Georgia. 

Coach McTavish had this to say about Paquin, “JC has made huge strides not only as a baseball player but, overall in his development as a young man this year.  JC has probably our biggest adjustment in a programs short history with English being his second language.  He responded very well with everything that is thrown at him and we are certainly going to miss the power LHH bat in the middle of our line-up.

Paquin, Morrill, and Petite are in the final stages with Team Canada!

Thunder Bay, Ontario – Brandon Petite, Lionel Morill, and JC Paquin are 3 of the final 25 invitees for the Canadian Junior National Team.  The summer tour begins in Thunder Bay, Ontario (July 13-16th) with games vs the Thunder Bay All-stars and Chinese Taipei, followed by Brandon, Manitoba (July 17-18) vs Chinese Taipei, Winnipeg (July 19), and Okotoks, Alberta (July 21-23) vs Okotoks Dawgs, USA, and Chinese Taipei.  The final cuts will be made (18 man roster) on July 22 and 23.  If they make the final roster the World Junior Championships take place July 25-August 3 in Edmonton, Alberta.  For more details please follow the Baseball Canada website – www.baseball.ca.

Coach McTavish had this to say about the 2008/2009 roster, “it should be interesting again with a whole new group of guys coming in.  Both Coach K and I are very exciting about the leaders we have returning and feel that the newcomers will fit in very well.  Our program is very demanding both in the classroom and on the field and we feel that the new student-athletes will meet and rise above the challenges.  The entire Jets program and Vauxhall high school look forward to welcoming these new young men into the Jets family.”

 

Lionel Morrill was selected in the MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins!

The VAB is proud to announce that OF Lionel Morrill (Edmonton, AB) was drafted in the 24th round by the Minnesota Twins – 726th overall.  Lionel becomes the 2nd player in the VAB’s short 2 year history to be drafted.  OF – Cody Phipps was drafted by the Houston Astros last year in the 28th round. 

The entire Academy organization and the town of Vauxhall is very proud of Lionel’s accomplishment.  The Twins now have until August 15th, 2008 to sign Morrill to a professional contract otherwise he will attend the College of Southern Idaho in the fall and will be able to re-enter the draft in 2009.  This years draft was dominated by college players with only 32% of the players drafted being in high school.
