Weekend Schedule Changes for April 17th/18th!!!

Vauxhall, AB –

Due to very poor weather conditions and massive amounts of snow the VAB-Edmonton Cardinals schedule has changed. 

Saturday April 17th – Cancelled. 

Sunday April 18th – Reschedule

1 pm – DH in Cochrane, Alberta @ the Rodeo Grounds (south diamond).  Directions and details are below:

Both Rodeo North and South diamonds are located in the Glenbow Subdivision, between the Safeway and Highway #22.

Access from Highway 22 heading North from TransCanada Highway:

Cross over Bow River, take first right onto Griffin Road. Take first left and drive past Safeway. At McDonald’s turn right into Curling rink parking lot and park. Walk down the hill to the diamonds.

Access from Highway 1A heading west from Calgary:

At first set of lights (at bottom of big hill) 4th Avenue, turn left. Cross railroad tracks, turn right onto Railway Street. Turn left onto xx Road then right after the curling rink and park in the lot. Walk down hill to the diamonds.

Jets split a pair of 1 run games over the final 2 days!

Las Vegas, NV –

The Vauxhall Academy Jets concluded their 12 day road trip with a pair of 1 run games at the Bishop Gorman Easter Classic.  On Friday night the Jets won by a score of 13-12 in a hard fought battle over Menlo HS, CA (San Fransico, CA).   Brody McDonald started on the mound going 3 innings allowing 6 hits, 4 runs, 0 BB’s with 4 K’s.  Brendan Hendriks earned the victory in 1 inning of relief allowing 2 hits, 5 runs, 0 K’s and 4 BB’s.  Ben Douglas threw the following 2 innings allowing 1 hit, 2 runs, 1 K and 5 BB’s.  Victor Caruso came in to slam the door in the 9th inning facing a very dangerous 2, 3, 4, 5 in the line-up with a pair of K’s.  Offensively, the Jets were ledy by Kym Barthel who was 2 for 4 with a double, triple and 2 RBI’s.  Chayse Marion was 1 for 3 with 3 runs scored.  Shane Zimmer was 1 for 3 with a run scored.  Ben Douglas was 1 for 3 with a 3 run HR.  Luke Barry was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored.  Blair Balog rounded out the offense going 2 for 4 with a double, triple, 4 RBI’s and a run scored. 

The win matched the Jets up with Bishop Monogue HS, NV (Reno, NV) on a short turn around at 9 am Saturday morning.  Taylor Simmonds started on the mound taking the loss going 3 innings allowing 3 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned runs, 2 K’s and 6 BB’s.  Blair Balog threw 3 solid innings allowing 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 K’s and 1 BB.  Offensively, the Jets were led by Kym Barthel who was 1 for 2 with a run scored and SB.  Brant Hittel was 1 for 4 with a run scored and RBI.  Ben Douglas was 1 for 2 with an RBI and run scored.  Shane Zimmer was 2 for 3 with a triple, RBI and run scored.  Brody McDonald was 1 for 4 with an RBI.  Nick Koh was 1 for 3 to round out the offense. 

The Jets ended the road trip with 4 wins and 4 losses overall playing teams from LA (CA), San Fransico (CA), Reno (CA), Fallon (NV), Surrey (BC), Victoria (BC), Kelowna (BC) and Lanely (BC).  The team attended the UNLV – Texas Tech baseball game in which former Jets – Jay Johnson and Brandon Petite – play for Texas Tech. 

The Jets overall record is 11-5 and next action is Saturday April 17th vs Edmonton Cardinals. 

** The Jets would also like to wish 3B/1B – Chayse Marion and RHP – Levi Westerlund good luck in their quest to make the Canadian National Junior Team.  The team is playing games April 15-25th in Orlando, Florida.

Errors cost the Jets in the winner bracket!

Las Vegas, NV

The VAB Jets lost a hard fought battle to San Benito, CA by a score of 8-3.  The Jets committed 4 very costly errors  and ended up allowing 6 unearned runs against a very good San Benito club.  Paul Schaak started on the mound going 5 quality innings allowing 4 hits, 5 runs, 2 earned runs, 6 K’s and 4 BB’s.  Justin Davies threw 2/3 of an inning allowing 2 hits, 3 unearned runs, 1 BB and 1 K.  Victor Caruso threw the final 1 1/3 innings allowing 0 hits and 0 runs. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Luke Barry who was 1 for 4.  Chayse Marion was 1 for 2 with a run scored.  Ben Douglas was 3 for 3 with a double, RBI and run scored.  Brendan Hendriks was 1 for 3 with a double and RBI.  Curtis Mazurewich was 1 for 3 with a double. 

The loss pushes the Jets record to 1 – 1 in the Bishop Gorman Classic and overall 10 – 5.  The Jets play Friday vs Menlo, CA at 5 pm at Hadland Park.

Jets open up with a victory in Las Vegas!

Las Vegas, NV –

The Vauxhall Academy Jets opened up the Bishop Gorman Easter Classic with a victory over Churchill County, NV by a score of 16-2.   On the mound the Levi Westerlund started on the mound earning the victory going 4 innings, allowing 1 hit, 2 runs, 2 earned runs, 8 K’s and 7 BB’s.  Marc St. Jean threw the final inning with 2 K’s. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Brant Hittel who was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s.  Chayse Marion was 3 for 3 with 4 runs scored, 5 RBI’s and a 2 run HR.  Ben Douglas was 1 for 3 with a triple, RBI and 2 runs scored.  Brendan Hendriks was 2 for 3 with a double, triple, 4 RBI’s and run scored.  Brody McDonald and Nic Koh also had a hit apiece in the victory. 

The win matches the Jets up against San Benito, CA who best a very good Oaks Christian High School.  Game time is 12 noon at Bishop Gorman’s new high school baseball complex. 

The win pushes the Jets overall record to 10 – 4 and 1 – 0 in the Easter Classic.

Jet lose in the semi-final of Best of the West!

Kamloops, AB –

The VAB Jets started on a positive note but to make walks and errors ended in a 10-2 loss to a strong Fraser Valley Chiefs club.  Taylor Simmonds started on the mound taking the loss going 3 innings allowing 5 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned runs, 1 K and 6 BB’s.  Justin Davies returned to the mound going 2 inning allowing 1 hit, 2 runs, 2 K’s, and 3 BB’s.  Victor Caruso threw the final 2 innings allowing 1 hit, 2 unearned runs, 0 K’s and 2 BB’s. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Kym Barthel who was 1 for 4 with a run scored.  Luke Barry was 2 for 3 with a double and run scored.  Chayse Marion was 3 for 4 with a double.  Brendan Hendriks was 1 for 3.  Blair Balog was also 1 for 3. 

The loss pushes the Jets record to 9-4 overall.  Next action is Wednesday April 7th in Las Vegas.  11 am PST start time vs Churchill County, NV at Hadland Park.

Jets take a loss in Game 3 of round robin play!

Kamloops, BC –

The Vauxhall Academy Jets lost the final game of round robin play by a score of 7-4 to the Langley Blaze Navy.  The Jets offense wasn’t able to get anything going all morning.  Blair Balog started on the mound and took the loss going 3 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 K’s and 1 BB.  Ben Dartnell threw 1 inning allowing 1 BB on 0 runs.  Brody McDonald threw the final 2 innings allowing 3 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 1 K and 2 BB. 

Offensively, the Jets only mustered 4 hits.  Chayse Marion, Ben Douglas (double), Greg Adams and and Marc St. Jean all had hits in the loss. 

Even with the loss the Jets finished as the #1 seed in their pool.  They will play in the semi final Sunday at 12:30 pm PST vs TBA.  The loss pushes the Jets overall record to 9-3 and 2-1 in the Best of the West Tournament.

Schaak dominates against Victoria!

Vauxhall, AB –

The Vauxhall Academy Jets won by a score of 8-0 behind a dominate pitching performance by Paul Schaak on a very cold day in Kamloops.  The game was very close until the 4th inning when the Jets broke it open.   Schaak was dominate going 5 innings allowing 1 hit with 6 K’s and 2 BB’s on only 59 pitches. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Luke Barry who was 1 for 3 with a run scored and RBI.  Ben Douglas was 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored.  Shane Zimmer was 1 for 2 with a BB.  Chayse Marion was 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored.  Matt Clark was 2 for 2 with a double, 3 RBI’s and run scored.  Blair Balog was also 1 for 2 and made a great play in the middle part of the game to end an inning. 

The win pushes the Jets record to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the tournament.  Next action is tomorrow morning at 9:00 am PST vs Langley Blaze who are 1-1.

Jets open the Best of the West with a victory!

Kamloops, BC –

The Jets opened up with an 8-0 victory over the Kelowna A’s on a chilly opening day.  Levi Westerlund started on the mound and went 5 innings to the earn the victory allowing 2 hits, 0 runs, 6 K’s with 4 BB’s.  Brendan Hendriks went the final inning with a K. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Chayse Marion who was 1 for 3 with a run scored, RBI and BB.  Brendan Hendriks was 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 BB’s.  Matt Clark was 2 for 4 with a run scored.  Blair Balog was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. 

Next action is Friday April 2nd at 11:00 am PST vs Victoria Mariners who are 1-0 with a victory over the Langley Blaze. 

The win puts the Jets overall record to 8 – 2.

Westerlund committs to play for Midland

Vauxhall, AB –

Another Jet has committed to play college baseball in the US.   RHP – Levi Westerlund – Oyen, AB – has committed to attend  NJCAA Division 1 Midland College Chaps in Midland, Texas.    The Chaps play in the very tough Western Junior College Athletic Conference.  For more details on Midland: http://www.midland.edu/athletics/baseball/

LHP – Paul Schaak – Winkler, MB – has committed to attend  NJCAA Division 1 College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in Twin Falls, Idaho.  Schaak follows 6 other Jets who are currently playing with the Golden Eagles (Morrill (2007-2008, Anderson 2007-2008, Craswell 2008, Paquin 2008, Bilodeau 2008-2009, Vavra 2008-2009).  The Golden Eagles play in the very challenging Scenic West Conference.  For more details on CSI: http://athletics.csi.edu/news/2009/11/4/BB_1104093045.aspx?path=baseball

RHP – Derek Grubel – Lethbridge, AB – signed a National Letter of Intent with the NJCAA Division 1 Muscatine Community College Cardinals in Muscatine, Iowa.  The Cardinals play in the very challenging ICACC conference.  For more details on Muscatine College: http://www.eicc.edu/athletics/mcc_baseball/index.html.

The 2009-2010 college committment campaign starts off with a bang as 2nd year standout Shane Zimmer has committed to Canisius College Griffins in Buffalo, NY.  Zimmer is just coming back from ACL surgery last May.

Jets drop the rubber match!

Vauxhall, AB –

THe VAB Jets dropped game 3 of the series by a score of 9-8.  A great play by the Prospects third baseman ended the game with the tying run on 3rd base.  The Jets committed 6 errors and allowed 10 BB’s in the loss. 

Blair Balog started on the mound going 3 innings allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 3 K’s and 2 BB’s.  Victor Caruso threw 1 2/3 innings allowing 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned runs, 5 BB’s and 2 K’s.  Brody McDonald threw 1 1/3 innings allowing 3 hits, 4 runs, 0 earned runs, 1 K and 2 BB’s.  Ben Douglas threw 2 innings allowing 0 runs, 2 K’s with a BB.  Brendan Hendriks threw the final inning allowing 0 runs, 0 hits with 1 K.  Offensively, the Jets were led by Ben Douglas was 1 for 4 with a double.  Shane Zimmer was 1 for 1 with 4 BB’s and a run scored.  Brant Hittel was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s and a HR.  Matt Clark was 1 for 3 with an RBI.  Marc St. Jean was 1 for 1 with an RBI. 

The loss pushes the Jets record to 7 – 2.  Next action is Thursday April 4th in Kamloops, BC at the Best of the West Tournament.
