Jets finish off 3 game sweep of PBA!

Lethbridge, AB –

It was a very blustery but sunny day in Lethbridge today as the Vauxhall Academy took on the Prairie Baseball Academy for the final game of their three game set. The Jets came out on top 18-7. The Jets pounded the ball offensively anchored by a season high 5 extra base hits and video game-esque numbers from the middle third of the Jets lineup. 4-5-6 hitters Greg Adams, Jeremie Fagnan, and Mitchell McGeein combined to go 9 for 13 with 9 RBI’s and all 5 of VAB’s extra base hits, highlighted by a towering 3-run home run by Fagnan in the 7th inning that would put the game well out of reach. Defensively, the Jets were sloppy committing 4 fielding errors that luckily didn’t dictate the outcome of the game. The mistakes will hopefully be mended with increased time on the field and a better approach to the defensive side of the game.

Today wasn’t an easy day to pitch for either side as both teams struggled with high pitch counts, lack of command, and little for secondary pitches to compliment the fastball. Logan Seifrit started and takes the win throwing the first three innings. An important thing for Seifrit today was taking control of at bats which he did by throwing first pitch strikes to 13 of the 16 hitters he faced in the day. Left hander Zach Mayo came in from the bullpen and worked three hard fought innings struggling a bit with command but battled hard inducing some key groundballs.   Blair Balog threw a solid two innings to finish the game, not walking anyone and striking out 2. Full pitchers lines are below.

The Jets are happy to get in three games this weekend in spite of all the weather challenges Southern Alberta has faced early this spring. The Jets hope to keep their modest four game winning streak alive against PBF (Calgary, AB) next Saturday, April 16th with a doubleheader slated for 1pm. The Jets record now stands at 6 wins and 3 losses.

Lethbridge, AB –

Sunday marked the Jets second time outside in Alberta all season, both meetings against the Prairie Baseball Academy. The Jets won both games in the doubleheader today, winning by scores of 7-2 and 15-9. The Jets offense broke out in a big way compiling 22 runs on 23 hits. All players lines are listed below. The Jets pitching staff pitched well throughout the day led by starters Anthony McKinley and Tanner Spencer who both picked up wins today. Mark Baigent and Archie Davis were strong in relief appearances both picking up saves.

Jets finish BOW with a win!

Kamloops, BC –

The Jets played their final game in Kamloops today in a consolation game against the Fraser Valley, B.C. Chiefs and won 7-0. The Jets played well throughout the game led by outstanding pitching from Zach Mayo, Logan Seifrit, and Anthony McKinley. The game moved at a rapid pace due to both teams pitchers working quickly and efficiently. Zach Mayo picked up his first win of the spring season throwing 4 outstanding innings allowing a single hit, no runs, no walked batters, and he struck out five (4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K).  Logan Seifrit followed and continued the Jets dominance on the mound throwing 3 innings, allowing only a single baserunner on a dropped third strike. His line would read 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Anthony McKinley came on to work a scoreless 8th inning throwing well in the process – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. In the Jets past 22 innings of work their pitching staff only allowed 4 hits, and 2 earned runs.

Offensively, the Jets scattered 2 runs and 4 hits through a quick first five innings of the game before breaking out for 2 in the sixth and 3 in the seventh inning. They ended up scoring 7 runs on 11 hits against a depleted Fraser Valley pitching staff. The Jets continue to grow offensively and that was witnessed in more aggressive approaches and the hitters putting themselves in better counts to succeed.

Zarowny 2-4 3B 1 run RBI, Kendall 1-2, Balog 0-2, Hendriks 1-3 BB 2 runs RBI, Adams 1-3 1 run HBP, Fagnan 3-4 1 run, Benn 0-1, McGeein 1-3 2 RBI, Lutz 0-3 2 RBI, Wallace 0-1, Mazurkewich 0-2 1 run BB, St. Jean 2-2 3B 1 run BB

The Jets hope the snow leaves the field soon and they can continue their spring schedule next weekend against Prairie Baseball Academy Junior Varsity team with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Stay updated on the latest Jets new on the website, and on Twitter by following @VABjets.

Jets take 2 really tough losses!

Kamloops, BC

On a drizzly, grey day in Kamloops, the Jets fought hard but to no avail, falling 2-1 to the Parksville Royals and 3-1 to the Langley Blaze. In both games the Jets faced arguably two of the toughest arms in the tournament.

Against Parksville, the Jets started Tanner Spencer who threw 5 solid innings, allowing 0 hits, 2 runs, both of which were unearned, 1 walk, 2 hit batters, and 2 strikeouts, throwing 70 pitchers. Anthony McKinley followed him throwing 1 dominant inning striking out the side on 13 pitches. On the other side of the ball, the lineup could only put together 1 run on 3 hits against a tough left handed arm. Brendan Hendriks, Matt Benn (double), and Travis Wallace accounted for the hits.

In the game against Langley, the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Jeremie Fagnan hit a solo home run over the rightfield fence to put the Jets up 1-0. However the lead would be short lived as the Jets would allow 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th, on an infield single, a walk, and a 2-run single from Langley’s cleanup hitter. The Jets would load the bases up in the 7th inning but couldn’t plate anymore runs leaving the final at 3-1. The Jets started Chad Hodges who would pitch 5 brilliant innings allowing only two infield singles. His final line would read 5 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Hodges did not allow a ball to be hit to the outfield in his five innings of work. Ben Dartnell worked the sixth inning allowing 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout.

While the two losses are tough to swallow, the Jets can hang their heads high knowing they fought and battled their way through two games against two extremely good arms. Our pitchers matched up every bit as good throughout the day and our hitters stood tall.

Contrary to what you may have read on Twitter, it has not yet been determined when our next game may be but as soon as we know we will let you know via @VABjets on Twitter or here ont he website.

Offensively, the Jets were led by Greg Adams who was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI’s and a triple.  Matt Benn was 2 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.  Tyson Zarowny was 1 for 2, Tyler Kendall was 1 for 3 with 3 runs scored, Brendan Hendriks was 1 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored, Jeremie Fagnan was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored and Travis Wallace was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.
