Jets win 2 to open up the season at Jets Stadium!

Vauxhall, AB –

The VAB Jets won 2 games over the U of C Jets by scores of 12-0 and 5-4. 

Game 1 saw the Jets offense explode and a no-hit pitching performance to win by a score of 12-0.  Offensively, the Jets were led by Kym Barthel who was 1 for 4 with an RBI.  Brendan Hendriks was 1 for 4 with with a run scored.  Shane Zimmer was 1 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.  Chayse Marion was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI.  Curtis Mazurkewich was 1 for 1 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored.  Marc St. Jean was 1 for 1 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored.  Levi Westerlund started on the mound and earned the victory going 4 innings allowing 0 hits, 5 K’s and 3 BB’s.  Marc St. Jean threw the final inning clean. 

Game 2 saw the Jets get out to a 5-1 lead and managed to turn a double play with the based loaded in the 7th inning to hold on for a 5-4 victory.  Offensively, the Jets were led by Kym Barthel who was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.  Brandt Hittel was 1 for 3 with a run scored.  Ben Douglas was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.  Shane Zimmer was 1 for 1 with a 2 run homerun.  Nic Koh was 1 for 3.  Taylor Simmonds started on the mound going 4 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run, 6 K’s and 2 BB’s.  Blair Balog threw the next 2 1/3 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 runs with 2 earned, 1 K and 4 BB’s.  Brody McDonald earned the save throwing the final 2/3 of an inning. 

The 2 wins pushes the Jets record to 4-0.  Next action is tomorrow against the U of C Dinos – 1 pm (DH)

Schaak committs to CSI!

Vauxhall, AB –

Another Jet has committed to play college baseball in the US.   LHP – Paul Schaak – Winkler, MB – has committed to attend  NJCAA Division 1 College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in Twin Falls, Idaho.  Schaak follows 6 other Jets who are currently playing with the Golden Eagles (Morrill (2007-2008, Anderson 2007-2008, Craswell 2008, Paquin 2008, Bilodeau 2008-2009, Vavra 2008-2009).  The Golden Eagles play in the very challenging Scenic West Conference.  For more details on CSI: http://athletics.csi.edu/news/2009/11/4/BB_1104093045.aspx?path=baseball

RHP – Derek Grubel – Lethbridge, AB – signed a National Letter of Intent with the NJCAA Division 1 Muscatine Community College Cardinals in Muscatine, Iowa.  The Cardinals play in the very challenging ICACC conference.  For more details on Muscatine College: http://www.eicc.edu/athletics/mcc_baseball/index.html.

The 2009-2010 college committment campaign starts off with a bang as 2nd year standout Shane Zimmer has committed to Canisius College Griffins in Buffalo, NY.  Zimmer is just coming back from ACL surgery last May. 

OF – Shane Zimmer – St. Albert, AB – signed a National Letter of Intent with the NCAA Division 1 Canisius College Griffs in Buffalo, NY.  The Griffs play in the MAAC conference.  For more details on Canisius College: http://www.gogriffs.com

Weekend schedule update!!

The DH scheduled for Saturday March 20th has be cancelled.  The schedule has been changed to play both days in Vauxhall at Jets Stadium.

Jets win another!

Lethbridge, AB –

The Jets won a well played ball game by a score of 5-2 on a sunny 20 degree afternoon at Lloyd Nolan Yard in Lethbridge vs PBA JV.  Paul Schaak started on the mound going 2 innings allowing 0 hits, 0 runs with 3 K’s.  Levi Westerlund threw a clean 3rd inning with a K.  Taylor Simmonds threw the 4th allowing 1 hit, 1 run, 1 BB with 2 K’s.  Derek Grubel earned the victory going 2 innings allwing 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 BB with 2 K’s.  Victor Caruso threw the 7th with 1 K.  Ben Dartnell threw 1 inning allowing 1 run, 2 K’s with 1 BB.  Chad Hodges earned the save with a K. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Kym Barthel who was 3 for 3 with a SB, run scored and RBI.  Chase Marion was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a SB.  Shane Zimmer was 2 for 4 with a solo HR.  Blair Balog was 1 for 2.  Luke Barry was 1 for 1 with a double. 

Overall, it was a pretty well played game by both clubs.  The win pushes the Jets overall record to 3 – 0.  Next action is planned for this weekend in Vauxhall.

Jets win the first 2 games of the season!

The VAB Jets earned a couple of victories to open up the 2010 season by scores of 12-1 and 6-5. 

Game 1 saw the Jets start Justin Davies on the mound going 2 innings allowing 0 hits, 0 runs, 3 K’s and 1 BB.  Paul Schaak threw a clean 3rd inning allowing 1 hit.  Chad Hodges threw the next 2 innings to earn the victory allowing 2 hits, 1 unearned run, 1 BB with 1 K.  Victor Caruso threw the final inning alling 3 BB’s with 0 runs.

The offense was very productive early in the game led by Greg Adams who was 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI’s.  Chayse Marion was 1 for 1 with a double, 1 run scored, 1 RBI and a SB.  Shane Zimmer was 3 for 3 with a double, 3 RBI’s and a run scored.  Brody McDonald was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, triple, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s.  Matt Clark was 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored.  Blair Balog was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. 

Game 2 saw the Jets open a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the 7th when the Dawgs threatened with 4 runs and the tying run on base with 2 outs.  On the mound Taylor Simmonds started on the mound going 2 innings with 1 BB and 0 runs.  Levi Westerlund threw the next 2 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 BB, 1 unearned run with 2 K’s.  Ben Dartnell threw a clean 5th inning to earn the victory going 1 inning allowing 1 BB, 1K with 0 runs.  Brody McDonald threw 1 inning allowing 1 BB, 1 K with 0 runs.  Blair Balog threw the final inning allowing 4 hits, 2 earned runs with 2 K’s to earn the save. 

Offensively, the Jets were led by Chayse Marion who was 2 for 3 with a HR, double and 2 RBI’s.  Shane Zimmer was 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored.  Matt Clark was 1 for 4 with a 2 run HR.  Blair Balog was 2 for 2 with a run scored. 

Overall, it was a great day to get outside and both clubs played fairly well for so early in the season.  The Dawgs and Jets will battle again on Tuesday at 3 pm (9 innings) @ Lloyd Nolan Yard.

The victories pushes the Jets record to 2 – 0 to open the season.

Due to a poor weather forecast on the weekend the series between PBA and VAB has been changed.  The schedule change is as follows:

Tuesday – March 16th – 3 pm @ Lloyd Nolan Yard – 9 inning game.

Grubel committs to Muscatine CC Cardinals!

4th Annual Awards/Scholarship Great Success!

Vauxhall, AB –

The 4th Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner was a great success again!  MC – Marty Baceda from Global Sports in Lethbridge and Featured Speaker “Denis Boucher” put on a great show with stories and a strong message to the Jets student-athletes.  With the Honorable Premier Ed Stelmach in attendance and a packed hall of 320 plus people with the evening raising close to $20,000.00.  The evening was highlighted with a cheque presentation from Premier Stelmach and MLA – Little Bow – Barry McFarland to assist in the building of the new Community Facility (consisting of the a dormitory, state of the weight room, state of video room, lockerroom, manager’s suite, athletic therapy room, players lounge and much more).  Thank you for all who attending the banquet, donated auction items and supported the program by buying raffle tickets and auction items. 

The banquet also consisted of many annual awards/scholarships being handed out:

4th Annual MLB Scout Day a success!

Vauxhall, AB –

A busy week began with the 4th annual MLB Scouts Day in the indoor.  There was representation from 6 Major League clubs (Phillies, Brewers, Padres, Mariners, Reds, Blue Jays) and the MLB Scouting Bureau.  In total there was 10 professional scouts in attendance.  The Jets pitchers threw bullpens and the hitters took batting practice – overall the event was again a success.  The day ended with Walt Burrows – Canadian Supervisor with the MLB Scouting Bureau addressing the group.

With the Scout Day behind us we now focus our attention to the 4th Annual Awards/Scholarship Dinner – March 6th.
